The short answer

Place the fraction or percentage measured from the named endpoint and release to lock. A quarter from the right lies at three quarters from the left. Friday fractions above one extend past the opposite endpoint.

Find the start, then place the fraction

  1. Read the fraction or percentage and whether it starts at the left or right.
  2. Treat the full original segment as one whole.
  3. Use half, quarters or thirds to locate an approximate target.
  4. Drag to your estimate and release to submit.

A precisely placed mark measured from the wrong endpoint is still wrong. Say the starting side before moving.

Translate a right-end target

Write the position as a fraction of the line measured from the left. For fraction r: left start → r; right start → 1 − r.

One quarter from the left is 25% from the left. One quarter from the right is 75% from the left. 3/8 from the right = 5/8 from the left = 62.5%. Marking 37.5% would mirror the target.

Three halves from the left extends half a line beyond the right; three halves from the right extends half a line beyond the left0 / Left1 / Right−0.51.5The teal segment is one original line length.
3/2 from the right reaches −0.5; 3/2 from the left reaches 1.5, measured from the left.

Friday fractions can land outside the line

Friday uses improper fractions such as 6/5, 5/4, 4/3, 3/2 and 8/5. Do not squeeze them into the visible unit segment.

3/2 from the left is at position 1.5: half a line beyond the right end. 3/2 from the right is at position −0.5: half a line beyond the left end. 5/4 from the left extends one quarter of the original length beyond the right.

The extended-fraction tool draws the original segment and both extensions so you can change the starting side.

Measure error against the original line

Error is the distance from your mark to the true mark divided by the original unit-line length. A mark five percentage points away has error 0.05 on any screen size.

That miss scores about 61 in Normal, whose tolerance is 0.05, and about 88 in Friday, whose tolerance is 0.10. Enlarging the diagram does not change the fraction or its normalized error. Compare the score curves.

Fix the kind of miss you actually made

  • Mirrored answer: correct the named endpoint before fine-tuning distance.
  • Unequal mental pieces: remember that 3/8 means three of eight equal pieces of the whole line.
  • Friday mark inside the line: separate the whole unit from the excess fraction.
  • Wrong scale: keep the original unit length as the error denominator, including outside targets.

For 11/8, first place one whole line and then another 3/8. Practice both directions with the same fraction to make endpoint mistakes obvious.
